Across the Lines

Book on Africa’s Queen of Chinese Opera:
By Njoku SaintJerry A.

If there is any African lady I will consider very remarkable and outstanding, Mariatu fills a very wide margin, an exemplary image of the cooperation and friendship between China and Africa. Mariatu Kargbo has achieved success as a Model, Musician and Philanthropist and almost becoming a household name among many of her fans here in China and back home in Sierra Leone where she’s been building up a followership of brothers and sisters keepers. I met Maria during the dress rehearsals of the first Miss Africa in China event in Beijing in 2009.

The young lady aside from her China experiences has just assumed a new role by this time, she has been crowned Miss Sierra Leone 2009.
The Miss Africa in China event was an eye-opener to the Beijing community – too many pretty African girls underground suddenly emerged on the scene – that fascination alone was enough motivation, so I went pep-talking in the midst of the ladies. ladies love some attention, so first thing I did was pull out a camera, did a quick shot and move closer to show the young woman what I have done of her then a conversation ensued.

There was a lot we couldn’t talk about in few minutes so we exchanged numbers and departed I rang Maria up later to book an appointment with her and she didn’t hesitate a second to bare it all out.
Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone in a not very rich home or not rich at all, Maria hawked sachet water and fish on the streets of Welling Cornhill Kissy, a suburb of Freetown in the former war-torn Sierra Leone to assist her family, attended a school known as AMS School and have always nursed a tall ambition.
